IN THE GOSPEL OF MARK
SERMON APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Mark 1:29-45
1. What does the healing of Simon’s mother-in-law teach us about Jesus’ person and character? How has this revelation about Jesus been experienced in your life? (does not have to be a healing)
2. If Jesus did not heal everyone (verses 32 -34) and the physical healings were only temporary (everyone healed would later die), then why did Jesus heal people? What was the point of the healings? Does this kind of healing exist today? Why or why not? If not, then what is this text meant to teach us about sharing our faith with others? If so, in what context do healings happen and how do we determine if it is truly of God?
3. What does Simon’s mother-in-law teach us about discipleship? Examine again Mark 1:14-31, which is a picture of what it means to be a disciple of Christ (devotion to Him, submission to His Lordship, and engaging in His service). Would your life convince the world that you are a follower of Christ? Why or why not? If not, what needs to change in your life?
4. What does the fact that Mark highlights Jesus’ prayer life mean about Jesus? What should it say about us? How do you cultivate deeper devotion through prayer?
5. Of what importance is it that Mark continually highlights the fact that Jesus came to preach the good news about the Kingdom of God (verse 38)? How do you view the importance of preaching and teaching in your Christian life?
6. The leper was an outcast in Jesus’ community (verse 40 and following). What kind of people are considered outcasts or are shunned by us today? What does this teach us about following Christ?
