Discovering UnExpected Joy
Living Worthy of the Gospel
Philippians 1:27-30
Application Questions for Week 7

Great movements of God often begin in
seemingly insignificant ways!

1. Read verse 27 again. The phrase “only conduct” is used to express a single-minded focus on the kind of life we are to live as Christians. It literally means “only to live your citizen life”. (a) Suppose you were asked by someone, “What does it mean for me to live worthy of being an American?” How would you respond? Now suppose a new Christian were to ask about living worthy of being a Christ-follower. How would you answer? (b) Christians have a dual citizenship (a nation and heaven). Which should be our first priority? How do we fulfill our responsibilities to both?

2. It is often easier to define “inappropriate behavior” than it is to describe a “gospel-worthy” lifestyle. (a) What do you think “living as God’s citizen, worthy of the gospel” looks like in practical terms? Note Paul’s use of similar language in Ephesians 4:1, Colossians 1:10 and 1 Thessalonians 2:12. (b) Are there areas of life in which you are not living worthy of the Gospel? Take time to confess, repent, and rejoice in the Gospel as you ask for the Holy Spirit to transform those areas. It might be helpful to share some of those with a trusted friend and ask them to prayerfully help and encourage you with them.

3. Read verses 27b-28. We discover three priorities for the church which are essential to living a life worthy of the Gospel. What are those three priorities?

4. Paul calls the Philippians to “stand firm” and to “contend side by side.” In both cases he is concerned about them acting in unity. What do “standing” and “striving” involve? Why is he so concerned about unity? Can you give evidence of striving to cultivate unity within the church?

5. Read verses 29-30. What are the two gifts God gives His church which help us live worthy of the Gospel? What does the first gift say about our salvation? What is the relationship between the second gift and gospel success? It has been said that the Western church has an inadequate understanding of suffering for Christ. In what ways is that true?

Looking Ahead…
Next week we will be considering Philippians 2:1-5, take time to prayerfully reflect on this passage in preparation for next week service.
