Lead Pastor Job Desciption

Biblical Qualifications

The candidate must meet the qualifications for the office of an Elder found throughout the Scriptures, particularly in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.

Theological Positions

The candidate must embrace GRBC’s Constitution, Statement of faith, and what is commonly known as The Doctrines of Grace (Total Depravity of Man, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace and the Perseverance of the Saints).

Education & Experience

Preference of 10 or more years of ministry experience, especially as a lead pastor, or in roles of mentorship for other staff members.Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies or related area needed, some seminary or work towards a master’s preferred.


Generally, this postiion will require the candidate to preach, lead, and administrate the daily affairs of the church while working in the context of a plurality of Elders.

Preaching & Teaching

The candidate will be responsible for all public worship gatherings of the church. The candidate must be called and gifted in preaching/teaching the Scriptures in Sunday worship gatherings. While there are many valid forms of preaching, the Elders of GRBC encourage expositional preaching.

The candidate will be responsible for administering the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. While preaching/teaching and sacrament duties are considered primary for the candidate, they can be divided among the Elders who are gifted in public preaching and teaching. This will be considered and thoroughly discussed during the interview process.


The candidate must be gifted in setting the future course of the church while working alongside the Elders from within our congregation. The candidate will have oversight of all pastoral and support staff dictated by the church's governing documents.


The candidate must be gifted in oversight and administration of the church’s daily affairs (1 Peter 5:1-3). While all of our major ministries have very capable leaders, the candidate must be able to provide the overarching direction needed to see that each ministry functions efficiently within the framework of the larger church (Ephesians 4:11-13).

Additional Duties

The candidate’s time should be primarily given to the three major duties as described above. In partnership with the other Elders and Deacons, the candidate will lead in the shepherding of the flock through coordinating with the elders and deacons visiting the sick, those in need of spiritual guidance, and visitors.

The candidate should expect to preside over weddings and funerals as requested.The candidate will be called upon to provide counsel to church members, couples planning to be married, baptismal candidates, parents desiring to dedicate their children, etc. In many cases, he will delegate these responsibilities to other Elders or church members.

Additional Information

The candidate must see his ministry at GRBC as his primary employment. Any employment outside of this ministry, whether paid or unpaid, must have unanimous approval from the council of elders.
