A Year in the Psalms
The Book of Psalms is the most comprehensive anthology of Hebrew poetry and worship material in the Hebrew Bible. The collection of Psalms was Israel’s Spirit-inspired hymnbook; meant to be sung as a part of worship within Old Testament Israel. These songs offer us meditations that should teach us both how to offer prayer and praise to God in an acceptable manner.
In Old Covenant corporate worship, the Psalms were often sung as the musicians of Israel played various instruments (1 Chronicles 25:1-7; 2 Chronicles 29:27-29; Ezra 3:10-11; Nehemiah 12:27). The New Testament Church sang Psalms as a part of New Covenant corporate worship. In Ephesians, Paul explains that one sign of being filled with the Spirit is speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:18-19). In Colossians, Paul writes, Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God (Colossians 3:16). The Psalms have been a central part of worship for the people of God under both the Old and New Covenants and we will do well to continue that tradition.
