Jesus In All The Scriptures
Three Old Testament foreshadows the ministry of Christ through the anointed offices of ancient Israel: the prophets (1 Kings 19:16), priests (Exodus 28:41) and kings (1 Samuel 10:1). In ancient Israel, God set apart such individuals to represent Him among His people and He would signify this appointment by anointing them for the respective office.
Through the history of the Church, believers have recognized the need for Christ to be the anointed prophet, priest and king because the three offices address our most pressing problems. As a prophet, Christ speaks truth into our ignorant minds. His words bring healing and as light, they scatter the darkness that blinds us from seeing the glory of God (John 3:16-21). As our priest, He removes our guilt (Hebrews 5:1-10). Finally, as our king, God’s anointed one delivers us from slavery to sin, a hard taskmaster (Romans 6:8-14). Our problems are that we are ignorant, guilty and enslaved to sin. Only the mighty anointed one can bring us out of such despair.
